COURSE DESCRIPTION
 
This 7-hour workshop will focus primarily on therapy strategies using a multi-sensory, motor-learning based approach to intervention for childhood apraxia of speech. Many of the ideas presented can also be incorporated into articulation/phonological therapy.   Extensive treatment video segments will be shown.  Included is an overview of evaluation and differential diagnosis. Parent involvement will be stressed with specific strategies outlined that have been found helpful in involving parents as partners in the therapy process. The agenda focuses on the challenges of diagnosing apraxia of speech in children, the principles of intervention, and the initiation and development of effective treatment strategies.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
 

At the end of the workshop, participants will:

 
1.     List the hallmark features and characteristics of childhood apraxia of speech.
2.     Identify differential diagnostic factors and treatment strategies that differ from other speech and language disorders.
3.     Identify multi-sensory treatment strategies effective in facilitating verbal communication for children with apraxia.
4.     List ways to infuse early literacy skill building into therapy for children with apraxia of speech.
5.     Outline factors important in family participation and involvement in the evaluation and therapy process.
FACULTY
 
Dave Hammer, M.A., CCC-SLP has been employed by Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania since graduating with his Master’s in Speech-Language Pathology in 1979. He has been the Coordinator of Speech and Language Services at the Children’s Hospital North satellite facility since 1988. Dave has a wide range of clinical experience, with specialty interests in apraxia of speech in children, childhood and adolescent stuttering, and severe articulation/phonological disorders. Dave has been invited to present workshops on apraxia of speech in Canada, Australia, and throughout the United States. He brings a “hands-on” perspective to his presentations, which include extensive videotaped segments of treatment in action. Dave was a member of the ASHA AdHoc committee on childhood apraxia and the Childhood Apraxia of Speech Association of North America Advisory Board. He has been a significant contributor to the production of the children’s CD “Time to Sing,” the introduction to apraxia DVD “Hope Speaks,” and the recently released DVD on “Treatment Strategies for Childhood Apraxia of Speech.
