COURSE DESCRIPTION

How are toe walking and late talking related?  Answer this question, and take your sensory processing/integration work to another level through logical, effective, easily applied techniques that OTs, SLPs, PTs, teachers, and others can use.  Help your clients improve respiratory, oral motor, postural, and hand function, as well as overall learning skills.  At an impasse with certain clients? Within a few sessions, the assessment and treatment strategies taught in this workshop can elicit functional changes in children and adolescents with ADD, Autism, Aspergers, Down syndrome, low muscle tone, learning difficulties, and other disorders.  A brief review of brain structures/functions/neural chemistry and of sensory processing functions/dysfunctions will help you functionally apply the information you learned in previous courses.  Group interactive experiences and DVD demonstrations provide opportunities for clinical problem solving.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

During this workshop, participants will:

1. Identify primitive/postural/oral-facial reflexes, their significance in overall development and function, and how these may impede the acquisition of typical postural/oral/hand skills.
2. Identify reflex connections to specific sensory systems, sensory processing/integration, subsequent performance skills, and activity demands.
3. Discuss the impact of reflex status on sensory-motor processing/integration, learning, memory, behavior, activities of daily living, and ultimately, school performance.
4. Identify modifications in home, school, and other environments as well as treatment strategies to address clients’ skills and activity demands.
5. Identify trans-disciplinary tools as well as helpful resources and references for enhancing skill development that OTs, SLPs, PTs, educators, and families can easily use.
6. Practice techniques discussed in workshop using respiratory, oral, postural, hand, and memory activities based on a reflexive/movement paradigm.

COMMENTS FROM AZ PARTICIPANTS 10/12/06

  • Enjoyed hands-on, video of treatment, learning to observe reflexes.
  • Great course!  Liked how it was on one topic with great detail.
  • Loved the treatment suggestions.
  • It was "all" very interesting.  Will absolutely start looking for reflexes.
  • I can apply this in my home health practice.
  • I liked the explanation of relationships between the different reflexes to speech and writing.

COMMENTS FROM CA PARTICIPANTS 11/9/06

  • The examples were great.  I thought the course was great!!!
  • Increased my knowledge of reflexes.  Current research including reading material.
  • Great examples of treatment.
  • Many of my students have non-integrated reflexes.
  • Great connections between reflexes and neuroanatomy.  I got new tools for sharpening my "therapeutic eyes."
  • I liked learning about the oral motor/speech reflexes.
